The core features of the design are playfulness, openness, and efficiency. The four petals of the inpatient building symbolize the HKU Hospital logo, and, with the sea breeze, they resemble rotating windmills, bringing vitality and renewal to children and cancer patients. The three-leaf design of the academic dormitory represents the three main functions of research, teaching, and hospital life, while also symbolizing Bougainvillea, the city flower of Shenzhen. Together, they embody the harmonious integration of Hong Kong and Shenzhen, reflecting the triad of medical, teaching, and research functions in a general hospital and the four-in-one model of medicine, teaching, research, and management at HKU Hospital.
